Accommodating conflict

Ultimately, a wide range of methods and procedures for addressing conflict exist, including but not limited to, negotiation, mediation, diplomacy, and creative peacebuilding.

The term conflict resolution may also be used interchangeably with dispute resolution, where arbitration and litigation processes are critically involved.

As with any other challenge, we approach this situation with a process.

At first glance, applying a process to a conflict may seem cold. Responding to a conflict without any kind of framework is less likely to be successful.

Uses: • When you realize that you are wrong (or less experienced or knowledgeable) - to allow a better position to be heard, to from others and to show that you are reasonable.

• When the issue is much more important to the other person than to yourself - to satisfy the needs of others and as a goodwill gesture to help maintain a cooperative relationship.

Conflict situations arise because of fear, force, fair or funds. Force of any kind initiates and concludes conflicts.

After a brief discussion on these issues, observe that, as interdependence increases, conflicts are bound to increase. People disagree because they see things differently, want different things, have thinking styles which encourage them to disagree, or are predisposed to disagree.

This passive pro-social approach emerges when individuals derive personal satisfaction from meeting the needs of others and have a general concern for maintaining stable, positive social relationships.

At the end of this session, participants should be able to understand and appreciate:1. Tangible as well as intangible costs may provoke conflict, and also help towards its resolution.

Fair is the sense of fairness, which determines the moral values of an individual.

Other causes of conflict can be communication gaps; personality differences; substandard performance; disputes over approaches, responsibility and authority; lack of cooperation; or competition for limited resources.
